THE PROJECT
ABOUT THE PROJECT .
The project focuses on developing biotechnologies for sustainable water recovery, addressing two key challenges: reuse of domestic wastewater and nitrate remediation of groundwater. The project proposes solutions such as microalgae/bacteria-based systems and constructed wetlands for rural communities and the modification of urban systems to treat specific compounds such as nitrogen and emerging pollutants.
Furthermore, the project addresses the increasing contamination of groundwater with nitrates, proposing autotrophic denitrification bioprocesses as a solution. A series of work packages are proposed that investigate technologies for sanitation and wastewater treatment, as well as the remediation of contaminated groundwater using different electron donors.
The project includes the formation of a team of international researchers and collaborators, with a focus on knowledge creation, technological development and training of new human capital. It also seeks to raise awareness in society, especially among younger generations, about the responsible use and recovery of water.
PROJECT OBJECTIVE .
To determine the feasibility of selected bioprocesses to provide reclaimed water with a quality compatible with its safe use in either agricultural applications, or for human consumption.
STRUCTURE OF THE PROPOSAL.
The project is divided into eight work packages that respond to specific objectives.
